In May of 2022, Claire and I departed our studios at Box13 to move into Kiosk, our new design-build studio from architect Ben Koush (benkoush.com). We now have room to work, a clean well-lit space, and a comfortable working situation with climate control. If you haven't already been over to see it, I invite you to come visit and see what we've been up to.
As a project of Prospect New Orleans, Box 13 members, of which I am a part, traveled to New Orleans and installed "Gulf Currents," drawing work from 11 members of the Box 13 collective. The show will be in place until January 28, 2018.
https://tengallerynola.org I present work completed during the past year. Included are a number of newer small drawings that explore naive figuration and volume, as well as an exploration of imaginary landscapes.
In September, I participated in the Book Machine project at the Texas Contemporary art fair. I had 3 hours and the help of a graphic designer to layout a book. The result can be purchased here.
Sketch Klubb, a group that I helped found in 2005, is having its first show in two years at Box 13 Artspace on Harrisburg Boulevard in Houston. Opening Reception Saturday January 11, 2014, 7:00-9:30pm Sketch Klubb will be offering tribute to Michael Harwell as well as presenting recently created pottery by all members. This exhibition will be in all of Box 13's galleries and is open through February 15, 2014. The galleries are open Saturdays 1-5PM or by appointment. This show is a tribute to our dear friend and Sketch Klubb member, Michael Harwell. Michael tragically took his own life earlier this Fall. As part of our exhibition, we will provide a meditation on Bart Simpson, one of Michael's favorite subjects. 1000 Crappy Bart drawings will adorn the walls of Box 13. Also featured are selections from Klay Klubb, a recent addition to the Sketch Klubb repertoire. Thanks to the help of Clay and Cabernet via McCheek's Academy, we will present some truly atrocious ceramic work. Expect some bongalicious garbage. One of the Sketch Klubbers linked to this London-based illustrator, Charlotte Mei. These ceramics are really wonderful and have the kind of energy and dynamism mixed with a twee sensibility that I really admire. I'd like it if my own ceramics had the same kind of vivacity. I really should learn how to make and fire my own plates instead of relying on the greenware in the shops. Pictured above is Toast Plate, only £100 on her Big Cartel shop.
I recently opened a show in Sacramento, California at the Center for Contemporary Art. At the show's lecture, I discussed my process and the beginnings of Sketch Klubb here in Houston. Later, after the talk, I invited members of the public to join me as I led the inaugural meeting of Sketch Club Sacramento. We listened to Can and drew. A link to the lecture can be found here. Prepare for rambling. Thank you to Jenny Stark for inviting me to come to Sacramento. It was my first solo show outside of Texas.
